This course will define techniques and materials available for researching, searching and identifying historic Great Lakes shipwrecks. It will combine basic instruction with case studies. Included will be an overview of research methodologies and resources used to tell the story of an historic Lake vessel. This seminar is based on a lecture series that Brendon Baillod, our presenter, has conducted for the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee over the past few years. It will be divided into these three parts:

1. Great Lakes Shipwreck Research: Methods and Resources
   • Where to begin: primary and secondary sources
   • What people will want to know about the shipwreck
   • Methodologies and their differences
   • Documenting your research
     
     
2. Searching for Shipwrecks on the Great Lakes
   • What are the techniques, technologies, barriers and costs?
   • Overview of sidescan sonar, magnetometry & bathymetric resources
   • Factor analysis: last known position, weather conditions, etc.
   • Resouces for analysisConstructing a search grid
     
     
3. Shipwreck Site Management & Interpretation
   • Shipwrecks and the law: What you need to know
   • Identification of types of vessels and their component 

Our presenter, Brendon Baillod, is one of the best-known authorities on western Great Lakes maritime history and shipwrecks. Brendon has conducted original research into historic Great Lakes shipwrecks for over 20 years. He is a past president of the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association, a trustee of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and a director-at-large of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History. Brendon is a founder of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, whichhosts Milwaukee’s annual Ghost Ships Festival, and is a frequent consultant on Great Lakes shipwrecks. He has appeared as a subject matter expert on the History Channel, Discovery Channel and Science Channel, and was the recipient of theAssociation for Great Lakes Maritime History’s 2008 “Award for Historic Interpretation.” Brendon is the author of “Fathoms Deep But Not Forgotten: Wisconsin’s Lost Ships,” a comprehensive guide to the historic shipwrecks of Wisconsin and has published more than 50 articles and stories in regional magazines and journals.
