We are very excited to announce the upcoming class, Introduction to Foreshore & Underwater Archaeology! This will be taught by our very own David Thompson.
The class dates are June 1 & 2, 2019 and will be held at the CMM (Chicago Maritime Museum) from 9am-5pm. The cost to attend is $125 for each student.
Some of our group have been able to take similar NAS (Nautical Archaeology Society) courses in the past, but a lot of us are new to the research methods and eager to learn!
Being a certified diver is NOT required.
We have 10 spots available and we will give priority to members of UASC and Mudwater Archaeology Society of Peoria.
After that, it will be opened up to others in our Archaeology community.
If you would like to register, please e-mail;

Hello,
Come join the Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago at our upcoming meeting, next Wednesday, April 24th!
Our guest speaker, Benjamin Sells, will be presenting on his book, The Tunnel Under The Lake!
Hear the gripping story of how the young city of Chicago, under the leadership of an audacious engineer named Ellis Chesbrough, constructed a two-mile tunnel below Lake Michigan in search of clean water. When it opened in March 1867, observers, city planners, and grateful citizens hailed the tunnel as the "wonder of America and of the world."
Benjamin Sells is a writer and sailing captain who owns and operates one of Chicago's oldest sailing schools. He was a syndicated columnist and has written many articles and books on law and psychology, including The Soul of the Law, which was recently reissued in a twentieth-anniversary edition by the American Bar Association, as well as Order in the Court: Crafting a More Just World in Lawless Times (1999) and The Essentials of Style: A Handbook for Seeing and Being Seen (2007). Sells is also the President of the Village of Riverside."
See you there,
Colin Bertling

We now have a new date for the Direct Survey Measurement course taught by David Thompson which was postponed earlier this year... It will be Sunday, July 29th, and at this time we plan to hold it at the Maritime Museum. David has offered to give the DSM course in the morning, and in the afternoon, give a course on photomosaicing. If there is interest, we can do that. I recommend everyone be prepared to pay $25 per course. Please email me at
Description of the Direct Survey Measurement course is below:
An Introduction to Three-Dimensional Computer-Based Survey/Direct Survey Measurement (DSM)
You know how to make a two-dimensional site plan. Now why not take your trilateration measurements to a new level? On three-dimensional sites, where trilateration has to be supplemented by plumb lines or other means of measuring depth, DSM is faster and more accurate method.
DSM was developed to provide a simple, rapid, and accurate technique with quantifiable error, for surveying underwater sites, especially those with limited visibility and extremely complex three-dimensional architecture. It is very accurate, easy to use, and is the most accurate method of using a tape measure.
Photomosaic is the process of taking a series of pictures of a site, and then stitching them together to create an overall picture of the site. It is a very useful tool and not easily done. David will be able to provide some valuable pointers of the process.
